Why Are D.S.S. Main Supports So Important?

It seems that everybody today is trying to get more and more power from their engines.  Increasing engine RPM’s, or adding nitrous, turbos' or superchargers are some sure ways to increase power, but they can be very tough on durability.  Additional stresses generated by running higher RPM’s or using power adders are transferred directly through the pistons, rods and crankshaft  to the block’s main webbing.  Commonly, the reciprocating force can overwhelm the main bearing caps and the fasteners that hold them in place.  Under heavy loads, the caps will shift or “walk” from side to side.  This movement is transferred to the ends of the main cap fasteners, causing the threads to become fatigued.  Eventually the main web cracks, leading to a loss in oil pressure and possibly total destruction of the block and internal components.  To combat this problem, Ford Racing offers Splayed Four-Bolt main racing blocks.  While excellent pieces, the price puts them out of reach for the average enthusiast.  This is where the D.S.S. Main Support System comes in.  Starting at $299.95 the D.S.S. Main Support System is a very cost-effective way to add strength to a production block without breaking the bank.

Made of  3/4” Billet 6061-T6 aluminum,  the D.S.S. Main Support System effectively dampens damaging harmonics, virtually eliminating main bearing walk.  The Main Support Plate is fastened to the main caps using custom ARP main studs (included), effectively  tying all five main caps together. By adding another main web structure you dramatically increase the block’s strength, helping both block and crankshaft life.  Our Main Support System makes it possible to produce 650-plus horsepower from a production block.

Shown in the photo's at right is the metal transfer or welding that takes place in high horsepower, ( above 400 HP. ) production block engines.  This is a direct result of main cap walk.  The D.S.S. Main Support System helps eliminates main cap walk and the metal transfer that occurs, protecting the block and rotating assembly.

Cracking the main webbing in a production block is common on engines without a Aluminum Main support to dampen the harmonics. The D.S.S. Main Support System Ads an additional 3/4" thick main web to support the main and dampen the Harmonics that crack blocks. This system Has been Race proven in numerous  650+ Hp production block applications .

When the main caps are allowed to move on a production block so does the main bolt or stud. With the bolt or stud prying on the block like a pry bar It doesnt take too long to crack the threaded hole in the block.

Chris Beary Relies on The D. S. S. Main support and Pro Tray windage Tray to protect his D.S.S. XR 306 Renegade engine from Main cap Walk. At his horsepower level ( 8.70's )even a 4 bolt Main Boss block walks caps without it.

" Main Cap walk was a big problem on my 4 bolt main Block race block. My block needed to be align honed every 30 or 40 runs. The cap register was getting so loose the caps would just fall off. D.S.S. installed the Aluminum Main support in the off season in 2006. I ran the whole 2007 season over 100 passes and countless dyno pulls with out touching the XR363 bottom end. When D.S.S. freshened the engine for the 2008 season it was the first time the caps were still tight in the register and no align hone was required."
When you make big Horsepower Even 4 bolt Splayed caps wont save you from the damage that Main Cap walk causes. The answer is to dampen the harmonics that cause the main caps to move in the first place. The D.S.S. Aluminum Main Support System is the only system on the market that addresses this problem.
Note all the metal transfer on the cap parting surface. This fretting is caused by the cap walking back and forth, friction welding transferring metal between the cap and block.
Note the block side damage. This picture shows the stakeing process needed to tighten up the cap register. Main cap walk has pounded the registers out of the block making the caps loose. Scrapping the block or Stakeing to tighten it back up and align honing is the only fix at this point. The D.S.S. Aluminum Main support System would have prevented this.

Just like the First Main support we Designed and fabricated over fifteen years ago, we did it to fix a problem. Our Design / Manufacturing capabilities and commitment to the sport is what allows us and our customers to continue pushing the envelope

The
DSS Main Support System is a very effective oil scraper.  The introduction of the DSS Pro-Tray just took it to the next level.  Constructed from 1/4" 6061 T6 billet aluminum, this bolt-on system makes all others obsolete.  Our billet aluminum, full length, multi-level Pro-Tray offers the ultimate in windage control and fits most aftermarket and stock oil pans. The Pro-Tray is very effective at scraping off excess oil and removing air from the oil.  Aeration of the oil is drastically reduced by shielding the rotating crank from the oil pan sump, protecting your expensive engine.  This shielding also frees up horsepower by eliminating splash windage losses.  The close proximity of these components and the free flowing one-way design removes horsepower-robbing windage. The Pro-Tray is a direct bolt-on accessory to our DSS Main Support System. The combination of added strength, longevity, and horsepower these two items bring to a stock block is a must for today's high tech, high horsepower combinations!
